## Description

FKQ no longer points to the old Torea airstrip: Fakfak's traffic moved to the new Siboru Airport when it opened on 25 January 2024, and Torea has been closed since. Fakfak occupies a remote peninsula of West Papua and is known across Indonesia for its wild nutmeg, the prized 'Pala Fakfak'. The replacement field has a 1,600-metre runway and an apron sized for just two Caravan-class light aircraft plus one mid-size ATR 72 of the type Wings Air operates; there is no dedicated cargo terminal, no freighter service and no cold chain. An infrastructure programme due to start in 2026 is to extend the runway, cut back two hills that constrain operations and enlarge the apron. Air freight therefore travels as belly cargo on turboprops, limited by the space those aircraft can spare. Nutmeg and other regional output reach national and international networks through the larger airport at Sorong (SOQ), by feeder flight or by sea, and onward via Makassar (UPG), where export customs formalities are handled rather than at Fakfak. For forwarders, FKQ is a collection point at the start of the chain.
