## Description

Long before Esenboğa opened, Etimesgut was the capital's airport — which is why the IATA code ANK still points to this military field (LTAD) 15 kilometres west of Ankara rather than to a commercial terminal. The base is owned by the Turkish Air Force and jointly operated with the Turkish Aeronautical Association (THK), with the longer military runway 11L/29R to the north and the THK's shorter 11R/29L to the south. Its 11th Air Logistics Command runs two transport squadrons moving military materiel and personnel, but no commercial air cargo is accepted here and there is neither a freight terminal nor a customs facility for trade goods. The site also hosts the Türkkuşu flight training centre, founded in 1935, and the biennial IDEF defence and aerospace exhibition. Commercial shipments to and from Ankara are handled at Esenboğa (ESB), roughly 35 kilometres northeast of the city, with Istanbul (IST) behind it as Türkiye's largest air cargo gateway.
