## Description

Erenhot matters to China–Mongolia trade mainly on rails and rubber tyres: the Erenhot/Zamyn-Üüd crossing is the largest land border point between the two countries, a junction on the Trans-Mongolian Railway and the funnel for some 42 China–Europe rail services, open around the clock since a 2024 pilot scheme. Erenhot Saiwusu International Airport (ERL/ZBER), about 27 kilometres south-east of the city and roughly 32 kilometres from the border, plays a far smaller part. Opened in 2010 and renamed with international status in early 2025, it has a 2,400 metre code 4C runway and a terminal of some 5,000 square metres. A freight building has existed since 2018, but no regular freighter operation is documented and air cargo travels as belly load on passenger flights. The winter 2025/26 schedule covers around six routes flown by four airlines, including Beijing Daxing, Hohhot, Xilinhot and alternating Chifeng and Tongliao services. Since 10 July 2025 Hunnu Air has linked Erenhot with Ulaanbaatar daily using an Embraer 190, the airport's first international route. For actual air freight, Hohhot (HET), Beijing Daxing (PKX) and Beijing Capital (PEK) remain the working options, with Ulaanbaatar (ULN) on the Mongolian side and road or rail pre-carriage to reach them.
