## Description

No civilian consignment ever crosses this ramp, yet few Alaskan airfields matter more: Elmendorf Air Force Base (IATA EDF, ICAO PAED) on the northern edge of Anchorage flies F-22 Raptors, C-17 Globemaster IIIs and E-3 AWACS with the 3rd Wing, plus C-17, HC-130 and HH-60 aircraft with the Alaska Air National Guard's 176th Wing. Merged with the Army's Fort Richardson in 2010 into Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), it houses Alaskan Command, the Alaskan NORAD Region and Eleventh Air Force headquarters. There is no commercial passenger or cargo traffic, no freight terminal and no customs office open to forwarders. Commercial shipments move through Ted Stevens Anchorage International (ANC) a few kilometres to the southwest, one of the world's largest cargo airports thanks to its role as a transpacific technical-stop and transfer point; Fairbanks (FAI) serves the interior. Road access runs via the Glenn Highway and Minnesota Drive Expressway, with the Alaska Railroad linking the city to the Port of Alaska. In August 2025 the base hosted the summit between the American and Russian presidents. For logistics planning EDF is simply off-limits; for North American air defence it is a cornerstone.
