## Description

Since 1917 Ellington (IATA EFD, ICAO KEFD) has worn many uniforms: army training field, air force base, and today a joint-use airport shared by NASA, the Texas Air National Guard's 147th Attack Wing, the Coast Guard and civil business aviation under Houston Airport System management. Johnson Space Center astronauts keep their flying proficiency current here in T-38 jets, and NASA's WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft are based on the field. A 400-acre site next to the Johnson Space Center has been developed since 2015 as the licensed Houston Spaceport, and the roughly two-mile Taxiway Lima now under construction will connect it to the main runway, opening more than 100 additional acres of airside land. There is no scheduled passenger service and no open cargo terminal: aerospace, maintenance and some freight-adjacent businesses operate on site, but forwarders cannot tender consignments to a freighter here. Air cargo for greater Houston moves through George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) some 55 road kilometres north, with William P. Hobby (HOU) close by for smaller shipments. Customs clearance accordingly takes place at those airports and at the neighbouring Port of Houston.
