## Description

Cut flowers, French beans, mangoes and other perishables are the cargo that defines Eldoret International (IATA: EDL, ICAO: HKEL), the leading freight gateway of western Kenya's Rift Valley highlands. Sitting at roughly 2,120 metres elevation some 16 kilometres south of the city, the airport handles around 12,000 tonnes of import cargo a year and currently sees three scheduled international freighter flights a week plus ad hoc charters. Ethiopian Airlines operates the freight service; inaugural exports in 2021 began at five tonnes of cut flowers per week and scheduled export operations resumed in March 2024. The apron takes medium-haul freighters in the Boeing 767 or Airbus A310 class, the on-site coldroom was enlarged from 150 to about 300 tonnes, and customs handling for agricultural exports is available on site. A runway extension now under way will add 600 metres to the existing 3.5 kilometres, reaching 4.1 kilometres so that wide-body freighters can operate and payload per departure can rise from about 40 to 100 tonnes — explicitly to spare exporters the road haul to Nairobi's JKIA. Road links run to Nairobi and toward the Uganda corridor, letting growers consolidate produce from a wide farming belt. For volume and intercontinental frequency, Nairobi-JKIA (NBO) remains Kenya's first address, with Mombasa (MBA) second.
