## Description

Unlike a functioning trade gateway, El-Obeid Airport (IATA: EBD, ICAO: HSOB) today reflects Sudan's war: the North Kordofan capital is the country's historic gum arabic market, yet scheduled civil flights are suspended or heavily restricted and the airport fills no commercial air-cargo role. Satellite imagery reviewed by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab in January 2026 pointed to possible siege preparations around El-Obeid, including new earthworks along the main exit routes, and in February 2026 trucks contracted by the World Food Programme were attacked from the air while moving from Kosti into North Kordofan. In July 2026 WFP described El-Obeid as the emerging epicentre of Sudan's displacement and hunger crisis: a city of roughly half a million people whose surrounding displaced population is estimated at several times that figure. Relief supplies therefore reach the region mainly through overland corridors rather than by air. Commercial exports such as gum arabic travel by road and rail to Port Sudan (PZU), which remains the country's functioning sea and air freight gateway and the only practical Sudanese option for air cargo at present.
