## Description

Built as the Israeli Air Force base Eitam and inaugurated in December 1976, the field changed purpose after the Egypt-Israel peace treaty: El Gora (EGH/HEGR) has since the early 1980s primarily supported the North Camp of the Multinational Force and Observers in north-eastern Sinai. Its position is sensitive — roughly 16 km from the Israeli border and about 21 km from the southern tip of the Gaza Strip. Two paved runways are available, 2,196 metres (08/26) and 1,219 metres (17/35), at around 100 metres elevation. Movements consist of MFO troop rotations, resupply and charter flights; there is no scheduled passenger or cargo service, and no cargo terminal or trade customs clearance is confirmed on site. Commercial air cargo for Egypt is handled at Cairo (CAI), which doubles as the customs and distribution centre, while El Arish (AAC) is the nearest civilian reference point in North Sinai. Because security in North Sinai has been strained for years and overland routes are periodically restricted, forwarders should plan regional consignments through Cairo and allow generous transit times.
