## Description

About 780,000 passengers passed through El Edén (AXM/SKAR) in 2024, and not one scheduled freighter — which sums up the airport of Armenia in Colombia's Eje Cafetero coffee belt. Avianca, LATAM and Wingo link the field, opened in 1959 and rebuilt after the January 1999 earthquake, with Bogotá and at times with Panama City and Florida; freight travels purely as belly cargo on those passenger services. The commercially interesting part is the neighbourhood rather than the apron: the airport sits on the boundary with La Tebaida, home to the Zona Franca del Quindío free trade zone and to processing plants for Hass avocado and plantain, including a facility rated at roughly 18,000 tonnes of fruit a year with pre-cooling rooms. Even so, the region's coffee and fruit exports leave Colombia mainly by truck — as ocean freight through Buenaventura or as air freight through El Dorado (BOG) in Bogotá, some 280 road kilometres away. Customs and export formalities are consequently handled in the free zone or at the departure hub, not at the AXM terminal.
