## Description

Ekibastuz Airport (EKB/UASB) should not appear in any current air freight plan: scheduled service ended in 2008 and the field, 16 km south-west of the mining city in Kazakhstan's Pavlodar Region, has been out of airline use ever since, having passed into private ownership. Its asphalt runway 05/23 measures 2,500 m at roughly 190 m elevation but is only about 20 m wide, which sharply limits the aircraft it could accept. There is no cargo handling, no customs post and no ground handling on site. Freight for Ekibastuz is therefore flown into Pavlodar (PWQ) about 130 km north-east, Astana (NQZ) roughly 380 km south-west, or Almaty (ALA), Kazakhstan's largest air cargo gateway, and trucked on from there. The region's real goods flows run on rail in any case: the Ekibastuz coal basin, with the Bogatyr open pit and the large coal-fired power stations, moves its volumes by train, while Kazakhstan's membership of the Eurasian Economic Union shapes import clearance and trade with Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. In summer 2026 the authorities announced plans to buy the airport back and rebuild it for around 40 billion tenge, with construction due to start in the autumn, completion targeted for December 2027 and the runway widened from 20 to 63 metres to lift the aerodrome category.
