## Description

Land at Ekati Airport (YOA) and you arrive not at a town but at a working diamond mine, 300 km northwest of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Operated by the Arctic Canadian Diamond Company, the private airfield is the mine's lifeline: roughly 800 workers fly in and out on two-week shifts, and for most of the year freight resupply arrives solely by air. Only during about ten winter weeks does the 475 km Tibbitt-to-Contwoyto ice road carry fuel and heavy equipment overland. This is industrial air cargo serving the mine, not a public freight facility. Since 1998 Ekati, Canada's first diamond mine, has produced more than 4.5 million carats a year.
