## Description

Eastern Iceland's main air gateway, Egilsstaðir Airport (IATA: EGS, ICAO: BIEG) is the country's fourth-busiest airport and the key link for a vast region taking in Lake Lagarfljót, the East Fjords and Vatnajökull National Park. Icelandair flies the route to Reykjavík's domestic airport seven days a week. There is no dedicated freight terminal; cargo moves as belly load on these passenger flights, with Icelandair Cargo forwarding consignments onward through Keflavík (KEF) to more than 40 destinations. Egilsstaðir's long runway also makes it an official diversion airport for Keflavík and North Atlantic traffic. For heavier or palletised shipments, Keflavík in the far west of the island remains the stronger option.
