## Description

A single 2,150 m asphalt runway (03/21) and an apron that currently holds only four or five aircraft define what Egilsstaðir Airport (EGS/BIEG) can and cannot do. Operated by the state company Isavia, it is eastern Iceland's main air gateway, served daily by Icelandair from Reykjavík's domestic airport, and one of four Icelandic fields designated as a 24-hour international alternate aerodrome for transatlantic traffic when Keflavík (KEF), some 415 km south-west, closes for weather or volcanic activity. There is no dedicated freight terminal: goods travel as belly cargo on the passenger flights and Icelandair Cargo forwards them through Keflavík to more than 40 destinations, with capacity tight enough that peak-season bookings should be made early. The catchment is the whole of eastern Iceland — the aluminium smelter at Reyðarfjörður, the fishing harbours of the East Fjords and the Seyðisfjörður ferry to Denmark and the Faroes — with road feeder traffic on Ring Road 1, where the drive to Keflavík is considerably longer than the straight-line distance suggests. Palletised and heavy air freight is normally routed via Keflavík, with Akureyri (AEY) the nearest alternative in the north, and any direct international flight into Egilsstaðir needs customs and border clearance arranged in advance. Since April 2025 Isavia has been designing a three-phase extension of taxiways and aircraft parking precisely to lift that four-to-five aircraft ceiling.
