## Description

Cold War interceptors once scrambled from this runway; today the biggest employer in town is a boarding school. Galena's Edward G. Pitka Sr. Airport (IATA: GAL, ICAO: PAGA) inherited an oversized strip from the Air Force forward base that closed in the 1990s — useful infrastructure for a roadless village of about 450 on the middle Yukon River. Everts Air Cargo serves Galena on its scheduled freight network, regional carriers fly passengers and Bypass Mail, and summer barges bring fuel and building materials up the river. The former base now houses the Galena Interior Learning Academy, drawing students from across Alaska. The nearest road system ends hundreds of kilometres away.
