## Description

While aircraft bring passengers and urgent parcels to Mayotte, almost all of the island's freight arrives by ship: DZA (ICAO: FMCZ), officially Mayotte-Marcel-Henry Airport and the territory's only commercial field, has no dedicated cargo terminal. Its single runway of roughly 1,930 metres (16/34) is among the shortest anywhere that sees long-haul traffic — fully loaded widebodies must stop en route — so Air Austral, EWA Air and Kenya Airways serve this French overseas department mainly with narrowbodies to Réunion, mainland France, the Comoros and Madagascar. Air cargo therefore moves as belly freight, while containerised goods pass through the deep-water seaport of Longoni near Koungou. As an overseas department Mayotte sits inside the EU customs territory but outside the EU VAT area, and imports additionally attract the octroi de mer levy, so clearance and landed-cost calculations differ from mainland French practice. Forwarders consolidating shipments for Mayotte typically route them via the regional hub on Réunion (RUN) or by sea, with Antananarivo (TNR) and Moroni (HAH) relevant only for very small consignments. The long-debated runway extension at Pamandzi has been dropped: in April 2025 the French president announced an entirely new airport at Bouyouni on Grande-Terre instead, with a runway of about 2.7 kilometres, an estimated cost of 1.2 billion euros and no opening before 2036.
