## Description

A 3,051-metre runway built for the U.S. Strategic Air Command sets Stephenville Dymond International Airport (YJT) apart from most of Newfoundland's regional fields. Constructed in 1941 and operated as Ernest Harmon Air Force Base until 1966, the airport was a transatlantic refuelling point for military jets. That heavy-jet pavement still lets it serve as a technical stop and diversion field for transatlantic cargo and charter operations. The Dymond Group's plan to build a regular transatlantic freight hub here stalled amid financial trouble, including a 2024 default judgment of nearly two million dollars. There is currently no dense scheduled or freight network, and western Newfoundland's main air access remains Deer Lake (YDF). The infrastructure for widebody freighters, however, is in place.
