## Description

Around 882,000 passengers passed through Dresden Airport (IATA: DRS, ICAO: EDDC) in 2024, making it Saxony's second airport after Leipzig/Halle and the home of a globally significant freighter business. Right beside the apron, Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) — an Airbus and ST Engineering joint venture — leads the world in converting passenger aircraft into freighters (A330, A321) and also performs heavy maintenance up to the A380. Cargo handling is provided around the clock by PortGround, a subsidiary of operator Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, while Lufthansa Cargo connects the airport to global networks. Its 2,850-metre runway accommodates wide-body freighter and maintenance movements. Dresden lies about 9 km north of the city centre, linked by the A4 motorway and the S2 suburban rail line. For pure wide-body freight capacity, however, the DHL European hub at Leipzig/Halle (LEJ), some 115 km west, remains the region's dominant cargo gateway. Ryanair withdrew all its Dresden routes in October 2024, weighing on passenger traffic.
