## Description

More than 100,000 tons of cargo and roughly 5,000 aircraft loaded or unloaded each year make the 436th Aerial Port Squadron at Dover Air Force Base (DOV/KDOV) the largest aerial port in the US Department of Defense — and none of that capacity is open to commercial shippers. The Delaware base hosts the 436th and 512th Airlift Wings, flying C-5M Super Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III on strategic airlift missions worldwide. Civil freighters do appear on the ramp, but only as charter carriers under Pentagon contract; forwarder consignments, integrator hubs and civil customs clearance are absent. Shippers in Delaware therefore work through Philadelphia International (PHL), about 110 km to the north-east, with Baltimore/Washington (BWI) as the second option and Wilmington New Castle (ILG) for charters and smaller consignments. Delaware Route 1 and Interstate 95 carry the road feeder traffic to those gateways, so trucking rather than a local flight is the usual first leg. Dover also houses the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations, the Department of Defense's only facility of its kind. For a civilian freight forwarder, DOV is a landmark rather than an option.
