## Description

Smart Aviation's light aircraft, not freighters, carry most of what leaves Douw Aturure Airport (NBX/WABI) for the interior — Enarotali, Mulia, Ilaga and Waghete have no road link to Nabire. Wings Air, Lion Air and Sriwijaya Air connect the Central Papua town with Timika, Sentani and Rendani, and Batik Air began serving the airport on 23 April 2026. Run by Indonesia's transport ministry as a Class II UPBU, it was inaugurated in November 2023, became fully operational in February 2024 and is equipped with a passenger terminal, a cargo terminal, an apron and a taxiway. A runway extension from 1,600 to 2,500 metres, costing around IDR 94 billion, opened the field to narrow-body jets such as the Boeing 737-800/900ER and Airbus A320 in spring 2026. Cargo moves as belly freight rather than on dedicated freighters, which makes NBX a collection and redistribution point for food, fuel and general cargo bound for the highlands. International consignments are consolidated at Makassar–Sultan Hasanuddin (UPG); Sentani (DJJ) near Jayapura and Mozes Kilangin (TIM) at Timika are the practical alternatives. No customs office for direct international traffic is confirmed at NBX, so import and export formalities are handled at UPG or DJJ.
