## Description

Unlike the wide-body gateway now taking shape a few kilometres up the coast, Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM/TDPD) on Dominica's north-east coast is limited by a runway of roughly 1,800 metres wedged between steep ridges and the Atlantic. Turboprops and regional jets operated by interCaribbean, Winair and seasonal American Eagle serve the island; there is no cargo terminal and no freighter activity, so air freight moves purely as belly load. Near Wesley, the roughly USD 1 billion Dominica International Airport is being built with a 3,000-metre runway able to take wide-body aircraft from North America, Europe and Asia — the project passed 40 per cent completion in 2026 and is currently expected to open in 2027, with China Railway No. 5 constructing for Montreal Management Consultants. Meanwhile the Nature Island's banana and produce exports leave by sea through Woodbridge Bay near Roseau, and the island has no railway at all. Forwarders consolidate larger or time-critical consignments at San Juan (SJU) or Antigua (ANU), while European-origin goods can also route through the EU customs territories of Pointe-à-Pitre on Guadeloupe (PTP) and Fort-de-France on Martinique (FDF), both about 150 kilometres away and linked to Dominica by ferry.
