About 15,000 tonnes of air cargo passed through Douala International Airport (DLA/FKKD) in 2024, against installed capacity of roughly 50,000 tonnes a year — enough to make it Cameroon's principal air freight gateway without turning it into a freighter base. Most of that tonnage travels as belly load with Air France, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Royal Air Maroc, and it skews toward high-value, time-critical goods such as electronics, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, alongside perishable agricultural exports. A XAF 95 billion modernisation programme, funded in equal parts by the Agence Française de Développement and operator Aéroports du Cameroun (ADC), started on site in June 2026: China Harbour Engineering Company holds the October 2025 apron contract worth XAF 10.4 billion over twelve months, while the terminal rebuild adds 20,000 square metres of new floor space and ten check-in desks for a target of 1.5 million passengers a year over a 24 to 30 month schedule. The airport's structural advantage is the adjoining Port of Douala, Cameroon's largest seaport and the supply route for landlocked Chad and the Central African Republic, which keeps sea-air combinations short and workable. Shippers wary of construction-phase congestion can look at Yaoundé Nsimalen (NSI), about 250 road kilometres to the east, as the alternative.
