## Description

Northeast of Donaueschingen, in the Schwarzwald-Baar district of Baden-Württemberg and close to the source of the Danube, Donaueschingen-Villingen (ICAO EDTD) is a licensed public airfield with a 1,200 by 20 metre asphalt runway (18/36) at about 680 metres elevation. Powered aircraft up to 5,700 kilograms maximum take-off weight are permitted, and up to 12,000 kilograms on request; users include Federal Police helicopters, business aircraft, gliders, ultralights, a flying school and a helicopter school. There is no commercial scheduled or cargo traffic, no freight terminal and no customs post, and flights outside published hours require prior permission (PPR). Air freight from the region therefore routes via Zurich Airport (ZRH) some 75 kilometres to the south, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) or Stuttgart Airport (STR), each roughly 80 to 90 kilometres away and well connected by the A81 motorway. Anyone routing through Zurich must factor in the Swiss customs border: goods need export clearance from the EU customs territory and import clearance in Switzerland, which adds time for urgent shipments.
