## Description

A single military airfield shared by two institutions: at Dolna Mitropoliya (ICAO LBPL) northwest of Pleven, the Georgi Benkovski Bulgarian Air Force Academy and the 12th Air Training Wing train the country's military pilots. The school was founded in 1945, moved to Dolna Mitropoliya in 1948 and has been part of the National Defence University since 2002; there is no scheduled civil traffic, no IATA code and no cargo handling. Air freight from northern Bulgaria therefore routes via Sofia Airport (SOF) around 170 kilometres to the southwest, which also handles customs clearance, with Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) across the Danube as a second option. Since Bulgaria's full accession to the Schengen area on 1 January 2025, checks on people at EU internal land borders have gone, making trucking times to and from Romania and Greece more predictable. The Pleven region is served by the E83 trunk road to Sofia and the Hemus motorway, while the Danube ports of Svishtov and Ruse offer multimodal alternatives. The base itself is not a booking point for forwarders.
