## Description

Dodoma has been Tanzania's official capital since 1996, yet Dodoma Airport (DOD/HTDO) remains a domestic-only field with no cargo terminal, leaving the nearest air freight handling some 450 kilometres east in Dar es Salaam. Air Tanzania and a handful of smaller domestic operators link the city mainly with Dar es Salaam and Mwanza; air freight is limited to occasional belly cargo on passenger aircraft, and there is no dedicated freight or customs facility for forwarders. International consignments therefore route through Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), reached from Dodoma by the standard-gauge railway and the A7 trunk road, with Mwanza (MWZ) an option for the northwest. A few kilometres north of the city, Msalato International Airport is being built as a replacement, with a 3,600-metre runway, capacity for roughly 1.5 million passengers a year and designated cargo areas. Funded by the Tanzanian government together with the African Development Bank and the Africa Growing Together Fund, the project stood at about 85 percent of infrastructure works in May 2026, with operations announced for September 2026. Until the new site actually handles freight, Dodoma moves people rather than goods.
