## Description

A bonded warehouse, a transit zone, refrigerated and deep-freeze storage and an express courier centre make Djerba-Zarzis (DJE/DTTJ) unusual among holiday airports and give it the status of Tunisia's second official freight airport after Tunis-Carthage. The field at Mellita, about nine kilometres west of Houmt Souk, opened in 1970 to serve the resort island of Djerba and handled more than 2.3 million passengers across 16,777 flights in 2025, a rise of 6.5 per cent. Tunisair, Nouvelair, TUI fly, Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss and Saudia operate mostly European leisure routes, while ASL Airlines France is among the carriers reaching the island. Despite the infrastructure, throughput stays modest and seasonal: in practice the volume moves as belly cargo in holiday aircraft, and dedicated freighter rotations are the exception. Larger consignments and intercontinental connections are therefore consolidated at Tunis-Carthage (TUN) some 480 road kilometres to the north-west, with Sfax (SFA) as an intermediate option. Tunisia's transport ministry has earmarked around 77 million dinars to modernise the airport's infrastructure and safety equipment, roughly 63.4 million of it for 2025 and 2026 and a further 14.2 million for 2027 to 2030. A Roman-era causeway keeps the island connected to the mainland year-round for truck feeder traffic, backed up by the ferry to Jorf.
