## Description

At roughly 3,280 metres above sea level, Diqing Shangri-La Airport (IATA: DIG, ICAO: ZPDQ) ranks among China's highest civil airports — thin air that cuts aircraft payload and rules out freighter operations. Opened in 1999, the field exists for tourism, flying visitors from Kunming, Chengdu and Chongqing into the Tibetan-influenced highlands of north-western Yunnan. During the July-to-September matsutake season, the prized mushrooms leave the prefecture as belly cargo toward Kunming and onward to Japan, typically within about two days door to market. There is no cargo terminal and no customs post on site, so forwarders route air freight via Kunming Changshui (KMG), roughly 600 kilometres south by road, where clearance takes place. Lijiang Sanyi (LJG), some 150 kilometres away, is the nearest alternative airport. Since November 2023 the 139-kilometre Lijiang-Shangri-La railway has linked the prefecture to the network toward Kunming, making the surface leg more predictable for non-urgent consignments. DIG therefore stays a belly-cargo feeder rather than a freight location.
