## Description

At 3,280 metres above sea level, Diqing Shangri-La Airport (IATA: DIG) ranks among China's highest civil airports — thin air that cuts aircraft payload and rules out serious freight operations. Opened in 1999, the field exists for tourism, flying visitors from Kunming, Chengdu and Chongqing to the Tibetan-influenced highlands of northwest Yunnan. During the matsutake season, the prized mushrooms leave the prefecture as belly cargo toward Kunming and onward to Japan.
