## Description

Pilgrims, not pallets: Jolly Grant Airport (IATA: DED, ICAO: VIDN) outside Dehradun reported roughly 1,900 tonnes of cargo in financial year 2025/26 according to Airports Authority of India figures, down about three per cent, which places it firmly in the belly-cargo category rather than among freight gateways. The field sits some 25 kilometres south-east of Dehradun and lives on passenger traffic towards Rishikesh, Haridwar and the Char Dham pilgrimage route, served by IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet to Delhi, Mumbai and other Indian cities. There is no dedicated cargo terminal, no bonded warehouse and no cold chain; consignments are processed through the AAI passenger terminal opened in 2021. Serious air freight from Uttarakhand — including pharmaceutical output from the Haridwar industrial belt — is normally trucked around 250 kilometres to Delhi Indira Gandhi (DEL), where bonded storage and full customs facilities exist. Expansion is moving: in May 2025 the Dehradun district administration secured 87 hectares for runway and terminal extension, taking land acquisition past 85 per cent, and in August 2025 the Uttarakhand government announced plans to raise Dehradun and Pantnagar to international status. Until then DED works best as a feeder and courier station, with Chandigarh (IXC) as a further alternative.
