## Description

Around 300,000 passengers a year make Deer Lake (IATA: YDF, ICAO: CYDF) Newfoundland's second-busiest airport after St. John's and the air gateway to the island's west coast, Corner Brook and the UNESCO-listed Gros Morne National Park. Porter Airlines is expanding sharply in 2026: five weekly flights to Ottawa (YOW) from 10 June, the Halifax route back from 2 March at three days a week and daily from April, and Toronto Pearson stepped up from three to five weekly rotations, alongside year-round service by Air Canada, WestJet and PAL Airlines, with Air Borealis linking northern Labrador. Unusually for a regional field, YDF runs its own cargo facility with secure storage and customs brokerage, so import and export shipments clear on site instead of being diverted; Allied Aviation provides ramp and cargo handling, de-icing and into-plane fuelling. Capacity is essentially belly freight on scheduled services — there are no dedicated freighter rotations. A terminal expansion of more than 2,000 square metres plus a new roadway is planned, with construction starting in 2027. Intercontinental volumes still consolidate through St. John's (YYT) and Halifax (YHZ), while heavy shipments travel by Trans-Canada Highway 1 and the Port aux Basques ferry.
