## Description

Eighty student pilots from ten nations train on latest-generation combat aircraft at Decimomannu Air Base (IATA: DCI, ICAO: LIED), which has hosted the International Flight Training School run by the Italian Air Force and Leonardo since July 2022 — the NATO Tactical Leadership Programme once based here moved to Albacete in Spain back in 2009. The field lies about five kilometres north of Decimomannu in the province of Cagliari and has served since 1979 as a front-line NATO facility for dissimilar air combat training, with an instrumented ACMI airspace and the manned, scorable Frasca bombing range. Italy's 2024-2026 multi-year defence planning document earmarks Decimomannu as an operational hub for F-35A and F-35B aircraft. There is no civil scheduled traffic, no cargo handling and no customs post for commercial consignments, and the base is not open to freight forwarders. Air freight for southern Sardinia is handled at Cagliari Elmas (CAG) some 20 kilometres east, with Olbia (OLB) and Alghero (AHO) serving the north of the island; heavy and bulky volumes travel by ferry and sea freight through the Porto Canale container terminal at Cagliari.
