## Description

A single 1,400-metre asphalt runway, 14/32, defines what Daru Airport (DAU/AYDU) can do: turboprops only, no freighters, no cargo terminal and no cold-storage capacity. The field is nonetheless the only public airport in Papua New Guinea's Western Province, sitting on a low island off the Fly River delta a little over 100 kilometres from the Australian Torres Strait border, and air freight travels purely as belly load on services to Port Moresby. Daru's economy rests on fisheries — barramundi, prawns and dried fish — and those volumes normally leave by sea, because neither tonnage nor price supports the air option. International consignments are consolidated and cleared at Port Moresby (POM); the nearest foreign gateway is Cairns (CNS) in Queensland, though no through-customs corridor runs from Daru. Runway, terminal and navigation equipment have been renewed several times under national aviation infrastructure programmes, but no current upgrade project is confirmed. For forwarders, DAU handles urgent goods and spare parts rather than freight in volume.
