## Description

SpiceJet, IndiGo and — since April 2025 — Akasa Air are the carriers that decide how much freight can leave Darbhanga Airport (DBR/VEDH) in north Bihar, because every kilo travels as belly cargo on their passenger services to Delhi and, from July 2025, Mumbai. The airport handled 589 tonnes of cargo in fiscal 2025/26, up close to 42 per cent year on year, driven by the perishables of the Mithila region: Shahi litchi in the short May-to-June window and makhana, the dried seeds of the prickly water lily. Scheduled operations only started in November 2020 under India's UDAN regional connectivity scheme, and cargo is still tendered through the Airports Authority of India passenger terminal rather than a dedicated freight facility. AAI is building an integrated terminal with runway upgrades and cargo provision, while the Bihar government has approved land for an adjoining cargo and logistics hub. International consignments continue to clear customs at Kolkata (CCU), roughly 500 kilometres to the south-east, or at Delhi (DEL), reached by road feeder service or connecting flight. Shippers working the litchi season should secure both capacity and cold-chain handling weeks in advance.
