## Description

Built on the site of the former US Navy station at Sangley Point, Danilo Atienza Air Base (SGL/RPLS) in Cavite has spent decades as a Philippine Air Force field rather than a commercial airport. That is changing on paper: a consortium of Cavitex Holdings, the Yuchengco family's House of Investments and India's GMR Group is developing the site into Manila Sangley Point International Airport, and the Air Force relocated the Atienza base command to Lumbia in Cagayan de Oro in May 2025. The roughly USD 2 billion first phase covers reclamation, a runway extension from 2.1 to 3.4 kilometres, a new passenger terminal and a dedicated access road from the Cavitex expressway, with groundbreaking most recently set for early 2026. No civil cargo is handled at Sangley today — there is no freight terminal, no ground handler and no customs post for commercial consignments. Shippers in Metro Manila continue to use Ninoy Aquino International (MNL), some 15 kilometres north-east across the bay, or Clark International (CRK) in Pampanga, which sees the country's densest freighter activity. Whether dedicated cargo facilities will follow at Sangley has not been confirmed.
