Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL, ICAO PHNL) moved roughly 623,000 US tons of cargo in 2025, making it by far Hawaii's dominant air-freight gateway and a mid-Pacific transfer point. Asia is the largest foreign cargo source, with shipments using Honolulu as a transpacific transfer hub. Perishables – reef fish, cut flowers, tropical fruit – fly, while heavy cargo sails: Matson and Pasha containerships at neighboring Honolulu Harbor give the airport a rare sea-air interface. Foreign-Trade Zone 9, anchored by a Pier 2 warehouse, lets shippers defer or avoid duty on the spot. With no freight railroad anywhere in the islands, this airport is the genuine backbone of Hawaiian trade.
