## Description

In 2026 Damascus International is best understood as a gateway in transition rather than a settled cargo hub. Since the fall of the Assad government in late 2024, the airport some 25 km southeast of the capital has resumed its role as Syria's principal air link, long the base of state carrier Syrian Air and private operator Cham Wings. It returned to scheduled service in April 2026 when Syrian airspace reopened, only to scale back again amid regional escalation that June. For freight, its current weight lies in humanitarian and reconstruction cargo — UN agencies, relief organisations and rebuilding supplies move through the airport's cargo facilities. The gradual easing of Western sanctions on Syria from 2025 onward is reopening channels for commercial imports as well. Clearance runs through the Syrian customs administration, though a predictable, fully sanctions-clear supply chain is not yet continuous. Forwarders therefore plan around volatile slots and, depending on the security picture, route via Beirut (BEY) or the Jordanian land border. Anyone shipping into Syria should treat DAM as available again but security-dependent, not as a reliable scheduled-cargo hub.
