## Description

Opened in August 2024, Çukurova International Airport (IATA: COV, ICAO: LTDB) near Tarsus is one of Europe's newest large airports, built to pool the traffic of the twin metropolitan region of Adana and Mersin on Turkey's south-eastern Mediterranean coast. Constructed under a build-operate-transfer scheme, it took over scheduled services from the city airport of Adana-Şakirpaşa; both cities, home to over three million people combined, lie roughly 30 minutes away by road via the O-51 and O-21 motorways. The Çukurova plain – ancient Cilicia – ranks among Turkey's most productive farmland, shaped for centuries by citrus and cotton, with Adana's industry and the steel and chemicals cluster of Iskenderun further east. The region's freight, however, does not move through the new airport: no meaningful air cargo operation has established itself at COV so far. The bulk of exports ships through the container port of Mersin, one of the country's largest, while airfreight is trucked north-west to Istanbul's IST and SAW. For forwarders, COV is for now a passenger field with bellyhold potential on domestic and Gulf services – and a location worth watching, because the new infrastructure carries substantial spare capacity.
