## Description

The river matters more than the runway at Corumbá International Airport (CMG/SBCR), Brazil's western outpost on the Paraguay River. Iron ore and manganese from the Urucum deposit leave by barge convoy on the Paraguay–Paraná waterway, while the airport itself has no confirmed cargo terminal or freighter service and carries only belly consignments. Azul restored the link to Campinas (VCP) on 2 March 2026, and Mato Grosso do Sul's tourism foundation has been negotiating to extend that operation to 30 November 2026 and secure it long term. Spanish operator Aena Brasil now runs the airport and has included it in the Phase 1B investment programme of its concession. The Bolivian border at Puerto Quijarro is only a few kilometres away, which makes Corumbá a customs location first and an air cargo location a distant second. Scheduled airfreight consolidates through Campo Grande (CGR), around 420 road kilometres east on the BR-262, with São Paulo/Guarulhos (GRU) handling the international leg.
