## Description

Contao sits on the shore of the Gulf of Ancud in Chile's Los Lagos region, along the Carretera Austral in salmon-farming country, and has a plain sea-level airstrip used by light aircraft and by government and medical flights. There is no terminal, no cargo handling, no customs post and no cold chain — decisive in a region whose exports are highly temperature-sensitive — so it cannot serve as an air-freight loading point. Fresh salmon therefore travels by refrigerated truck to Puerto Montt/El Tepual (PMC) about 80 kilometres to the north, southern Chile's perishables airport, and onward via Santiago (SCL) towards North America and Asia.
