## Description

Once notorious for its colonial-era prison and now a protected island destination off Vietnam's southern coast, Con Dao (VCS/VVCS) is served by an airport whose 2004 runway of about 1,830 metres still restricts it to turboprops such as the ATR 72. VASCO, the regional arm of Vietnam Airlines, and Bamboo Airways operate the mainland links. The transport ministry has proposed an upgrade to take A320, A321 and Boeing 737 aircraft, adding a parallel taxiway and new night lighting at an estimated 1.6 trillion dong, roughly 67 million US dollars, with a new civil area and terminal for around two million passengers a year planned by 2030. Air cargo is effectively absent: freight is confined to whatever fits in the belly of the passenger aircraft, and there is no cargo terminal and no customs post for international goods. Supplies reach the archipelago by sea from Vung Tau and the delta port of Tran De near Soc Trang, while planned air freight is booked through Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat (SGN), the dominant cargo gateway of southern Vietnam. A closure of several months during the runway works is under discussion, which matters for travel and supply planning.
