## Description

In the far south of Mendoza province, at about 1,428 metres above sea level, Comodoro D. Ricardo Salomón Airport (LGS/SAMM) serves the town of Malargüe. Scheduled traffic is thin and state carrier Líneas Aéreas del Estado (LADE) is the operator, flying three days a week to Mendoza, Bahía Blanca, Trelew, Puerto Madryn and Comodoro Rivadavia. Opened in 1947 and rehabilitated in 1983, the field lives off seasonal tourism — the Las Leñas ski resort, the volcanic Payunia reserve and the Pierre Auger Observatory. There is no cargo terminal, no freighter handling and no customs post; freight is limited to whatever fits in the belly of the LADE aircraft. Regional goods, from cattle and goat farming to oil and gas from the Neuquén basin, travel by truck on Ruta Nacional 40 and Ruta 144. Planned air freight is consolidated at Mendoza-El Plumerillo (MDZ), roughly 400 road kilometres north, and at Buenos Aires-Ezeiza (EZE) for international shipments.
