## Description

Built as a NATO cruise-missile base in the 1980s and reopened to civil traffic in 2013, Comiso Airport (CIY/LICB) is the regional field for the Province of Ragusa in southeastern Sicily. It handled roughly 303,000 passengers in 2023 and moves freight only as belly load — there is no cargo terminal and no freighter handling at present. That may change: the Sicilian regional government has earmarked 47 million euros for a dedicated cargo area, intended to open the airport to the export traffic of the Iblei region. From 25 October 2026 the schedule grows to 32 weekly flights, adding Malta, Naples and Venice and making Pisa year-round, with Aeroitalia, easyJet, Volotea, Neos, Wizz Air, Vueling and Transavia France on the apron. The greenhouse belt around Vittoria and Scoglitti supplies much of Sicily's early vegetables, so perishables and reefer capacity are the obvious use case for any future cargo facility. Until it is built, planned air freight for southeastern Sicily runs through Catania-Fontanarossa (CTA), about 100 km northeast, with Palermo (PMO) as the western alternative.
