## Description

A 1942 wartime field turned corporate gateway: Columbus Municipal Airport (IATA: CLU, ICAO: KBAK, FAA identifier BAK), three miles north of Columbus in southern Indiana, grew out of Atterbury Army Airfield and the later Bakalar Air Force Base. Its 2,000-acre site carries two concrete runways of about 6,400 ft (1,950 m) on 5/23 and 5,000 ft (1,520 m) on 14/32, with 77 based aircraft at the last count. Traffic is general and business aviation — Columbus is the home town of engine maker Cummins and, separately, famous for a collection of modern architecture running from Eero Saarinen to I. M. Pei. There are no scheduled flights, no freighter operations, no cargo terminal and no customs post; engines, spare parts and supplier components leave by truck on Interstate 65. Air freight is handled at Indianapolis (IND) some 45 miles north, home to FedEx Express's second-largest hub, or at Louisville (SDF) about 70 miles south with the UPS Worldport. Both sit roughly an hour away by road, which gives Columbus unusually late express cut-off times despite having no cargo facilities of its own. For forwarders, CLU is a business-aviation field with excellent trucking access rather than a freight airport.
