## Description

DET and KDET identify Coleman A. Young International Airport, the city-owned field on Detroit's east side about 10 km northeast of downtown, named for Detroit's first Black mayor. Scheduled airline service ended in 2000; today the airport serves general aviation, flight training and government flights, with roughly 90 movements a day, 96 percent of them general aviation. Despite the international title it handles no cargo, although the City of Detroit explicitly lists cargo transport and flight training among its development goals, and the Benjamin O. Davis Aerospace Technical High School reopened in the renovated main terminal in 2025 to train pilots and aircraft mechanics. Air freight for the Motor City clears through Detroit Metro (DTW) some 40 km to the southwest or through the all-cargo field at Willow Run (YIP) near Ypsilanti, home to Kalitta Air and Michigan's principal base for time-critical automotive freight. Avflight has run the airport as sole operator under a 30-year lease since 2024. For shippers, DET is a business-aviation base rather than a freight gateway.
