## Description

Built for war and kept for emergencies, the runway at Cold Bay Airport (IATA: CDB, ICAO: PACD), one of Alaska's longest at over 3,100 metres, dwarfs the village of about fifty people it serves at the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. Dating from the World War II Aleutian campaign, it is the premier emergency diversion field for transpacific ETOPS flights, with wide-body jets occasionally dropping in unannounced. Unlike most Aleutian strips, Cold Bay does move freight: Alaska Central Express runs scheduled cargo services, Alaska Air Cargo offers an inbound-only belly service on twice-weekly passenger flights, and seafood from local fisheries leaves as perishable air cargo, with roughly 1,000 tonnes of freight and mail handled in 2016. The field therefore doubles as a distribution point for smaller Aleutian communities that have neither road nor rail access; there is no road hinterland at all and heavy goods arrive by sea. Regional carriers link Cold Bay with Anchorage (ANC), the state's main cargo gateway, and Aleutian Airways expanded its service in 2025 after Ravn Alaska suspended scheduled flights in August 2024. Next door, the Izembek refuge hosts virtually the entire world population of Pacific brant geese.
