## Description

The IATA code BBQ has outlived the airfield it once identified: Codrington Airport on Barbuda closed permanently on 2 October 2024 and was replaced the next morning by the new Burton-Nibbs International Airport, which took over the code. The old strip on the edge of Codrington village measured only about 500 metres and could handle nothing beyond STOL and very light aircraft, so it never offered scheduled or freight services. Its successor has a 1,859-metre asphalt runway (ICAO TAPB) and accommodates far larger types, opening Barbuda to charter and feeder cargo on a meaningful scale for the first time. Shipments to Barbuda are still planned through V.C. Bird International (ANU) in Antigua, some 40 kilometres to the southwest, where Amerijet connects to Miami and San Juan, with final distribution by light aircraft or ferry. No dedicated customs post, dangerous-goods capability or cold chain is confirmed on Barbuda; customs formalities for Antigua and Barbuda are handled in Antigua. Records still listing BBQ as an active field at Codrington refer to the decommissioned predecessor.
