## Description

QantasLink has operated passenger and freight links to Australia's Indian Ocean Territories since 3 November 2025, taking over the route from Virgin Australia and flying in from Perth, sometimes via Christmas Island. Built in 1944 as an Allied bomber base for raids on Japanese-held Southeast Asia, the West Island airfield now keeps the roughly 600 residents of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands supplied. There is no dedicated cargo terminal; air freight moves in the belly of the scheduled flights plus a fortnightly freighter from Perth that carries the islands' provisions. Heavier or commercial consignments travel by sea or route through the Perth (PER) cargo gateway. The RAAF also uses the strip as a forward operating base for P-8 Poseidon maritime patrols.
