## Description

Solar power, not size, is what put Cochin International Airport (COK) on the world map: in 2015 it became the first airport globally to run entirely on solar energy. For freight professionals, the Kerala airport is a solid regional player rather than a national heavyweight. The upgraded export cargo terminal officially opened in early January 2026, lifting annual export handling capacity from 75,000 to 125,000 tonnes. The new facility adds two extra X-ray scanners with explosive trace detection, a dedicated dangerous-goods room, two cold rooms and a separate room for radioactive and high-value shipments. Spices, seafood and fresh produce dominate exports, riding ample belly capacity on dense passenger schedules to the Gulf states. Imports skew towards e-commerce and project cargo for Kerala's consumer and construction sectors. The seaport of Kochi with DP World's Vallarpadam container terminal lies some 40 kilometres away, enabling combined routings. Customs clearance runs through the air cargo complex with bonded warehousing; for large freighter volumes, Chennai or Bengaluru remain the bigger alternatives.
