## Description

Twenty minutes separate Lunken Field (IATA: LUK, ICAO: KLUK) from CVG's freighters, yet the two could hardly differ more: heavy cargo across the river, private jets here. Three miles east of downtown Cincinnati, Lunken was reputedly the world's largest municipal airport in the 1930s before the 1937 Ohio River flood — hence «Sunken Lunken» — and the postwar era pushed scheduled traffic up to Kentucky. Today it is purely a corporate- and general-aviation field handling around 32,000 operations a year, home to the business fleets of Procter & Gamble and Kroger alongside charter operators and flight schools. The city of Cincinnati, which owns the field, is converting the listed Art Deco terminal into a hotel and restaurant in a roughly 20 million dollar project due for completion in late 2027; runway 21R/3L has been permanently closed on safety grounds, and in April 2026 the city council released funds to design a taxiway reconstruction. There is no cargo handling, no freight terminal and no customs post on site. Regional air freight moves through Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International (CVG), home to a DHL hub and an Amazon Air hub, with Rickenbacker International at Columbus (LCK) about two hours north-east as a second option for full charters and heavy volumes.
