## Description

DHL Express is the only cargo carrier still flying out of Ciampino–G. B. Pastine (IATA: CIA, ICAO: LIRA), Rome's second airport some 15 km south-east of the city in Lazio, and it moved most of the 14,536 tonnes of freight handled there in 2024, up 4.5 percent year on year. Italy's Lazio administrative court confirmed in 2026 that the aviation authority ENAC had lawfully awarded the integrator ten daily cargo slots, securing the express operation through the summer 2026 season. Opened in 1916, the field is one of Europe's oldest still in service and today combines that express and mail traffic with a Ryanair low-cost base — close to 3.9 million passengers in 2024 — plus a busy business-aviation apron. Scheduled and intercontinental air freight for the Rome area is not handled here but at Fiumicino (FCO), roughly 40 km to the west. Road access is via the Via Appia and the GRA ring motorway, with trucking onward into Lazio and Campania. Shippers outside the express segment should plan for Fiumicino, or Milan Malpensa (MXP) for northern Italian volumes.
