## Description

Neither an IATA nor an ICAO code exists for the airfield at Sokolovka near Chuguyevka in Russia's Primorsky Krai, some 190 km northeast of Vladivostok, and that reflects its purpose: it was always a military field, never a commercial one. Its best-known moment came on 6 September 1976, when Soviet pilot Viktor Belenko took off in a MiG-25 and defected to Japan. The last unit stationed there, the 530th Fighter Aviation Regiment flying MiG-31s, was disbanded on 1 December 2009, and the base has not operated as an active military airfield since. There is no scheduled traffic, no cargo handling and no customs post. Air freight for the Primorye region moves through Vladivostok International Airport (VVO), which offers customs clearance and connections to the Trans-Siberian Railway and the seaports of Vladivostok and Vostochny, with Khabarovsk (KHV) as the alternative further north.
