## Description

Chu Lai (IATA: VCL, ICAO: VVCA), in the Chu Lai economic zone near Núi Thành in central Vietnam, is Vietnam's largest airport by land area but a purely domestic one in traffic terms: in early 2026 only Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air served it, and only to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. There is no dedicated cargo operation, no freighter traffic and no international customs clearance for air freight; shipments travel at most as belly cargo on the domestic flights. A planned upgrade worth around USD 432 million would lift capacity to ten million passengers a year with a new runway and terminal under a PPP model, with the long-term intention of developing Chu Lai into an air cargo location — none of which has been built yet. For now, central Vietnam's air freight runs through Da Nang International (DAD) about 90 kilometres north, with Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat (SGN) for intercontinental volumes.
