## Description

From a First World War grass strip to one of the largest German airfields in occupied Belgium, then a Belgian air force wing, Chièvres (ICAO EBCV, no IATA code) ended up as the airfield of NATO's SHAPE headquarters at Casteau near Mons, some 20 kilometres away. The station is run by U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, with the U.S. Air Force 309th Airlift Squadron as the resident flying unit handling liaison and staff transport. Its single runway of roughly 2,500 metres is reserved for military and official flights: there is no scheduled or charter traffic, no cargo handling and no public customs office. Forwarders cannot book or deliver here; military consignments move through the U.S. forces' own supply chain and the garrison. Commercial air freight for the region goes through Brussels Airport (BRU, about 65 km) and above all Liège (LGG, about 130 km), Belgium's leading freighter airport, with Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) as a third option. Road access via the E42 and A7/E19 makes trucking to those gateways straightforward.
